about

THE SPECTRES ARE DEAD

You heard it here first. After 10 years, over 100 shows, and one dozen-or-so loyal fans, we’ve called it quits. It turns out it’s difficult to maintain a two-man band when the two men in question are in different continents.

But fear not, what we have here are the first of two posthumous releases.

The Spectres … “In Horrifying Sight and Sound” was recorded [and later, mixed and mastered] in November of 2019 by “My War” Matt Schor at the War Room.

Things were looking on the up-and-up for us. Had several higher profile shows opening for Saint Pe and Des Demonas at the end of 2019, and had already booked an opening slot for the New Bomb Turks for 2020. I had circulated early mixes of these tracks and received two pending offers to release some assortment of these tracks on vinyl, one of which we were ready to pull the trigger on. And then, the world shut down for nearly two years.

Afterward, we resumed practicing and playing shows; life continued to happen. New jobs, both of us got married (to our significant others, not each other), one of us had a child, new bands were formed, beers were consumed, evenings spent watching Shaw Brothers and Hammer films. We never did quite get around to releasing these tracks, even though these songs were a big component of our live set.

We had big plans for a come-back, adding our friend Blake on drums and rehearsing some new material… and then I moved to the UK and now here we are, in January 2024, finally getting around to releasing the long lost 2019 Spectres album, in Horrifying Sight and Sound.

The first ten tracks comprise the album. I included alternate full band takes of two songs - possibly these were destined to be released as singles, or replacing the two-man-band takes on the album. I also included re-recordings of our 7" tracks that we laid down with Matt for fun.

Though we are effectively no more, keep an eye out for a final release of several of our newest Spectres songs, plus some new Creechers tracks, and some recordings of our latest Spectres-adjacent project Gato Gateau. I’ll probably release them all as a compilation on tapeurchin.bandcamp.com.
